Attendees at the annual Ethereum Community Conference (EthCC) in Paris heard from Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin about the network's longer-term prospects.

Buterin discussed the imminent "Merge," in which Ethereum would completely switch from proof-of-work (PoW) to proof-of-stake, at the developer-focused conference (PoS).

Buterin added, "After the merge you will be able to construct an Ethereum client that does not even know the proof-of-work phase has happened," when discussing the long- and short-term effects of the merge. In terms of the overall network growth of Ethereum, he continued, the protocol will be "55% complete once we finish the Merge."

Therefore, developers have a lot of work ahead of them.
