At EDCON 2022, Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, talks about the priority after the Merge, which is increasing Ethereum’s scalability. He explains why the improvement of Ethereum’s scalability is important, saying that there are two ways to look at this priority: Ethereum’s current transaction per second (around 20 tx/s) and transaction fees (still very high). He also talks about Ethereum’s rollup-centric roadmap. He says the job of the Ethereum base layer is to just be open, decentralized, censorship-resistant and secure, and as stable as possible in the long term. Then layer 2 projects can use the base layer to provide more scalability and speed. Vitalik says proto-danksharding, also known as EIP-4844, is probably the biggest EIP after the Merge that people are working on right now. The goal is to introduce a new transaction type, and Full danksharding is the further extension to the protocol that allows the chain to include a much larger amount of data. He believes three EIPs are needed to achieve our goals achieved: EIP-4844 (proto-danksharding), EIP-4337 (Account abstraction), and EIP-4444 (clients stop serving old historical data over p2p).
